Video application recommendation?

Date: Dec 13    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 332

I have fairly large (600mb +) AVI video files that I would like to get some
extracts from. Specifically, some frame grabs and short video clips (30
seconds average). For the clips, I will need good audio/video sync.

Anyone have recommendations for something in the repositories to do this
quickly and cleanly? I'm playing with Kino now, but not sure it will do what I
want. Import performance is not leaving me impressed either.

I'm not bleeding edge, but in good shape for kit - dual core 2.4ghz, 2gb ram,
lots of HDD.

You don't say what distro/version you are running. Do you
have a copy of Adobe Premiere? Whilst it kind of goes against
the grain to suggest it, your best solution might be to run
Premiere under WINE. I have had to do something similar
with Dreamweaver for web design work as there is nothing
(yet!) in linux to touch it and it works very well.

You might look at the manual for MythTV and see if it will work for
you. It makes a good TiVo program and much more. If you have trouble
setting it up look for the book Linux Smart Home for Dummies by Neil
Cherry
