Recommendations for easy to use software wanted

Date: Jan 02    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 594

I have recently purchased a very lovely mobile phone called a SAGEM
my411x and I am using it with the Australian 'Crazy Johns Mobile
Phone' network (it's a pre-paid mobile phone)

www.mobile-review.com/.../sagem-my411x-en.shtml

I have also purched a "USB Bluetooth Dongle" which is a small device
which fits into the USB port of my computer (as I understand).

My phone is pretty new to me, so I'm still learning how to use it. I
need to study the manual (unfortunately the phone's manual has very
small print -- difficult to read). I think I can go to the SAGEM
website and get the manual as a PDF file (thats what the Crazy Johns
mobile phone technical support centre told me).

The topic (subject) of this message says what I'm looking for. I
would like some easy to use software which will hopefully allow me to
transfer phone numbers, pictures, and sound files to the phone and
back to my computer. I would prefer to NOT need to use the command
line to type commands, as I still don't feel very comfortable about
doing this.

I'm still only learning Linux UBUNTU and I'll admit that I don't know
how BLUETOOTH etc all works. I'm using UBUNTU Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 (I
think). I will happily provide other specifications/details of my
equipment when requested.

Did you try bitpim. Just go and install bitpim

You can easily find it in synaptic (System → Administration → Synaptic
Package Manager).
OR
Install the debian package (.deb) from
http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/#download

It will recognize most of the phone and hope that it will recognize your
phone too..

Ubuntu 7.10 recognized the bluetooth in my laptop. but i didnt connnect my
phone bluetooth with the computer's one. so i cant that. I dont use
bluetooth that much.

Try
gnome-vfs-obexftp<blogs.gnome.org/.../gnome-vfs-obexftp-01-\
released/>i
heard that it was good. I haven't tried it yet.

Yes bitpim is for cdma phones but it sometimes supports other phones too...

So yesterday I went to the above website. And I downloaded "
gnome-vfs-obexftp-0.2.tar.gz"

Then I managed to use the Archive Manager to extract it into it's own folder
under my user name "Peter" (that is my user name I use to log in).

Then I opened a 'terminal' shell and I tried to follow the instructions.

To be honest, I was getting very upset 'cos I cannot find my reading
glasses.... I think I may have left them at my doctor's office. [ I get
upset because I need my reading glasses really to see the computer screen
properly... however, I'm using my normal glasses now and I can see the
screen okay for now! ]

Would someone here please be kind enough to step me through the commands I
need to type into the terminal shell to install this program? Also, just to
add to the problems, my printer does not have any ink in the cartridge (eg
the cartridge needs refilling!!!) ... so I cannot print out anything.

Someone recommended 'bitpim' software, however when I went to the Synaptic
Package Manager and found the bitpim software page -- it states that it is
for CDMA mobile phones.

My new phone is NOT a CDMA phone. In Australia (where I am) Telstra (the
Australian Telephone Company) are stopping the CDMA Network and on 28
January 2008 all CDMA phones will no longer work!!! That's why I need to get
my new mobile phone. ( I also have a Telstra CDMA phone -- my old mobile
phone, which is effectively useless now )

Telstra are promoting their new NextG Network -- however, I am not using
that network.!!!

I hope that this makes sense!!!

My new phone is a SAGEM my411x mobile phone. I don't really understand HOW
it works. I simply thank God that it does work.

My phone uses the Crazy John's Mobile Phone network -- if the means anything
to you?!? You can find out more about the Mobile Phone network by visiting
the Crazy John's website:

http://www.crazyjohns.com.au/

or you can find out about my phone by visiting the SAGEM website:

The URL pasted below is the SAGEM company's website and the page about my
model of phone.

www.sagem.com/mobiles/index.php?id=05&prod=205

Please note also that I have a "USB Bluetooth Dongle" plugged into my USB
Port on my desktop pc (this computer) -- however, I don't have a clue how it
works. The ppl in the Crazy John's Mobile Phone shop, where I purchased my
new SAGEM phone etc etc assures me that it will work with Linux. But I don't
know how to use it.!!!

My hoping that I'll be able to transfer pictures, videos, and phone numbers
etc between this computer and my mobile phone.

I've never done that kind of thing before and I'm still learning how to use
the SAGEM phone and also learning how to use Linux UBUNTU.
