FAx,Printer,Scanner,copier etc. thing. Brother has specific linux
drivers for the scanner and printer on their site, as well as complete
instructions for installing them. Also, if you check the Ubuntu help
pages for scanner installation, you will find them there as well. Of
course you'll need the XSane front end...it's in the Ubuntu repository.

While I don't use the printer feature, (I have a HP D4160 that's just
great),I like this 'all in one machine' because it can be had new for
under $50 and uses 4 individual ink cartridges so when one color runs
out you don't have to buy and expensive multiple cartridge. Also the
Brother ink jet engine, unlike epson products, can remain off (unused)
for long periods of time without breaking the whole printer after the
nozzles dry out. Simply run the 'clean out' routine (on the machine
itself: Note..no additional software for your computer to manage the
unit, thus no compatability problems here), and new fresh ink will be
pumped to the nozzles. I have left my machine off for months at a
time, and have had no problems restarting the ink after the clean out
proceedure is followed. Some have complained about excessive ink usage
on these machines, but I have not had that experience probably because
I'm not using it as a printer. Also, I have found numerous deals on
multiple ink cartridge set on Ben's Bargains list (bensbargains.net).
The last time I bought ink, I got 9 cartridges (3 sets) for under $13
shipped!

As a copier, (I really needed one), it works great and as a scanner
it's as good as any I have had under windows before I closed that for
good. Xsane is a great front end so you should be set.

This machine has some other interesting features like slots for SD,xD
and CF cards, and will read them directly w/o the computer. It prints
a thumbnail page and you can edit/crop photos onboard. There is a
later model to the MFC 210C that I suspect works as well and has been
on Ben's list for $50-$60 new. I got mine used on ebay for $20 + $5
for shipping, but got the usb cable with it. The operator's manual is
all english and about 200 pages...so many bells and whistles! Try
one, I think you'll like it!

I am using a umax astro net 3470 I picked up used for $15.00.It is fully
supported including al fucntions with the tranparency scanner (from 35mm slides
to 8x10 inch) it does it all with a 1200 dpi max return

I am using the HP 1510 All in one thingy. The printing is pretty much the
same for me with it under XP Pro, XP Home, and Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy (Feisty
and Gutsy having parts of Studio installed). The scanning part is, I
believe a little bit different, but if I recall correctly the last time I
tried it it worked on some level for me (and then I edited the pictures with
gImP or some such editor.

I use an Epson 4490. The negative/transperency scanner is sweet.
The Ubuntu forums have a install guide that is quick and easy. Works
well on 7.10 32bit. I haven't been able to get it to work with the
64bit version.
