Sound in Redhat 8.0

Date: Nov 24    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 417

I have Installed Redhat 8.0 . The Installation was successful. Every thing is working fine except Sound and Modem.

1. Regarding Sound :

a) I did not get the startup music after i logged into RH8 Bluecurve environment. It was the same whether i opted for Gnome,KDE or WindowMaker.

b) I tried to play some Mp3z, Audio CDs from XMMs and KDE media player , but no use. Even i was unable to add the songs to palylist editor in XMMS or any of the palyers avialable.

c) But Strange thing is , when i have tested from the preferences Panel , Test Sound was successful. Even i ran sndconfig , it detected the Audio Card , it is intel Ac'97 and sample clip was audible.

2. My Modem is Internal , and so it failed to Detect.

But previously i was running redhat 7.3 ,Every thing was perfect.
i would like to tell , i did not upgrade to redhat 8.0 , but i reinstalled the whole.

All I can guess is that the X window system is causing
problems in the sound subsystem. The "Test Sound"
button you used may actually map directly to the sound
card and not thru anything else. Not too sure.

Probably already done this but some most audio driver
when loaded have the mixer settings set to zero volume
or mute.
Kill any sound servers that are running like esd or
jack. i think RH8 has the esd sound server (not sure).
Look at the info files on the driver loaded and check
that it´s actually the right one. (i have had RH auto
detect wrong, several times)

Check all system logs for any other hints tom what can
be wrong.
