Sound with 8.10

Date: Dec 14    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 388

I was able to get sound to work on 8.04 by editing the alsa-base file found
in /etc/modprobe.d folder.

I tried doing the same thing on 8.10 and can't get "permission" to save the
file.

This is one type of thing that makes me loose patience with M$ products.

It doesn't even ask me for a password. How can I get rid of the permission
thing, so I can gain control of my own computer?

I saved the edited file on my desktop. If I try to save it to the modprobe.d
folder, I don't have permission.

You need to open the file with sudo before your gedit command. In the terminal
type: sudo gedit [file name with path] You can also use gksu instead of sudo. If
you don't know the path or file name just use gksu gedit and then navigate to
the file from gedit. I hope this helps.

Here is what I had to do.

I found this in the ubuntu forums.

#Comment out the following line
#options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
# Added the next line
options snd-intel8x0 buggy_semaphore=1

I didn't bother commenting out the index=-2 line. It still works fine.

Then rebooted the system.

I'm going to keep all of this in my notes. I failed to do that last time.
