Date: Dec 13    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 641

I an trying to run a wireless adapter, Atheros AR242x 802.11abg
Wireless PCI Express Adapter, on a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5917. As
part of my diagnosis I ran sudo lshw -C network. Response:
*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Ethernet controller
product: AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter
vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
version: 01
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix cap_list
configuration: latency=0

(Unclaimed - there is no driver loaded.)
The help menu says there is a way of loading a Windows driver. Does
anyone have experience with this?

Refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/internet/C/wireless.html

Basically unclaimed means that the hardware is detected by the kernel, but the
driver is absent. You will likely need to install ndisgtk and use your Windows
driver. See the section on Windows wireless drivers. Re-boot after installing to
load the driver. You should then see wireless listed when you right click on the
network manager in the system tray.
