update on my 8.10 install

Date: Dec 14    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 356

As I recently posted, I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 4100 from 8.04 to 8.10
with LOTS or problems. No sound, no wireless, inconsistent crashing,
weird screen blurs, .... Im sure there was more. Since my laptop was now
totally unusable I decided to download 8.10 and try a fresh install. I
wanted to boot from the usb key but that didnt work on this older
laptop. But I now have 8.10 installed and except for a few strange
screen blurs - everything seems to be working.

That is good news (the last part not the first). It is tempting to go the
upgrade route, as they make it so simple to do. In practice, we are doing
something quite complicated. We are transposing the new over the old and it is
the vestiges of the old that aren't updated that give us the problems. This is
usually where we are most vulnerable because we had to take extra and therefore
non-standard steps to get the original video or wireless working. However, I am
glad to see that you are back on track albeit with some streaks.

I had internet for a minute.... yup just about 1 minute.

I had sound for a while.... lost that when I looked away from my machine.

(Ghost in the machine :D )
