cd/dvd emulator

Date: Dec 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 774

I need a way to put CDs into their own virtual drives. These
will be Windows educational programs to be run with Wine. (In
Windows I would use Alcohol 52 or Magic Disc.) A Google search
yielded this:

Can anyone can advise me on the best way to go for Ubuntu?

That is, no radical copy-protection schemes as applied in
some of the fancy game software.

At one of those links I found this:

www.linuxforums.org/.../71966-cd-dvd-emulation-software-li\
nux-daemon-tools.html

---------------------------------------
The kernel itself has the ability to mount ISO images (but not cue or bins),
using the "mount" command. If you want a graphical interface check this page
www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=44805 it can also help to
convert cues and bins to ISO.
---------------------------------------

This doesn't specifically refer to Ubuntu, but does it apply?
That would be nice. The link for a graphic interface was empty,
but I could nicely use mount. If that's the case, however, what need is there
for the likes of these?

http://cdemu.sourceforge.net/

...No mention of .deb on that page.

www.farstone.com/software/virtual-cd-tower.htm

...Which says Red Hat, SuSE, Turbo Linux only, and Windows

This is an interesting page, though seemingly not
Linux-specific:

www.filebuzz.com/files/Linux_Virtual_Drive/1.html

...and, again, no mention of .deb -- I'd like to stick
with the repositories if possible. If not then I would
attempt a conversion from RPM, or compile. Never compiled
source code in Linux before.

How about this

http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&q=cd+dvd+emulator&btnG=Search

Google has a linux only search parameter which will give you only linux
related search results.

Have you tried running Alcohol 53 or Magic Disc in Wine and then doing
everything from in the virtual C: drive created by Wine? Or you could go the VM
route to accomplish the same thing. I only emntion this because you are used to
them and they are Windows disks. The c: drive is found at
/home/username/.wine/drive_c. You can store as many ISOs as you want in this
location provided that your HD is large enough.

There are several good ISO programmes in Linux, AcetoneISO (from getdeb.net),
FuriusISO
(www.ubuntugeek.com/furius-iso-mount-mount-and-unmount-iso-images-with-gu\
i-tool-in-ubuntu-linux.html), and ISO Master and Kiso (in repos). A number of
programmes in Linux can also extract ISOs including 7-zip and File roller. K3b
can make an ISO quite easily.

Once you open an ISO in Linux by either mounting it or by extracting the files
then you can launch the startup file which should launch Wine. However, Wine is
far from complete which is why I suggested the VM route. With a VM you can mount
the ISO in the settings for the CD drive which is very handy. The only problem
would be re-booting each time, but it is quite quick in a VM.
