Video problem

Date: Feb 05    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 294

Firstly, I love linux and cant imagine myself returning to windows for
daily use. However, one thing which has baffled me since I downloaded
ubuntu 10.04 is the crash of videos everywhere e.g. bbc, bbc iplayer,
eurosports, TED etc. The videos play for couple of minutes (if I am
lucky) and then it starts buffering, and it never proceeds. And i have
to reload the page.

This happened on ubuntu 10.04, ubuntu 10.10 and now gentoo. I am not the
first one to experience this problem. The following is the link
summarising similar experience.

By the way, videos work great on windows XP. Some say that its because
of flash. However, I dont understand that when I had 9.04, it worked ok.

I really would like to solve this problem or at least know the root cause of
this. Surely, its not a bug?

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

i dont have any problem with bbc i player on ubuntu 10.04.

maybe your internet connection is slow,
or your computer cant cope witrh all that data
(especially full screen)

does it work if you click [download]
and only play them when theyre on your computer?

I agree with you. That's the horrible part of this problem. My friend's laptop
is completely fine.

I doubt its the internet connection. I ran speed tests and it shows brilliant
speeds. Live streaming on BBC works ok. I never managed to download iplayer on
my pc. It always gave errors and never tried to figure out (my bad).

Full screen or no full screen does not make a whole lot difference.

If my computer cant cope with data, then how XP is not affected?

Are there any log files created so at least I can understand whether its the
hardware problem (which i seriously doubt) or the software?
