Date: Dec 21    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 392

I have a Dell M780 Monitor
and a Diamond / ATI S9250 PCI 256 DDR Graphics card
( Chip Radeon 9250
DAC Internal 400 Mhz)

I try to set monitor for 1024 X 780 at 75 Hz

but it always defaults to a lower res

no matter how many times I try.

how does one ( step by step )

set up graphics resolution in Ubuntu GG so it is set and saved that way

ATI is not the most Linux friendly of graphics cards. In order for the graphics
to work properly you need both the right graphics card driver and monitor
driver.

When it defaults to a lower res it is a sign that your graphics card is not
setup properly to work with the settings that you are asking it to run at.

Generally speaking there are open source and restricted drivers in the
repositories. Use the restricted ones if you can as they are usually better. You
can also use an application called Envy to build a graphics driver for your
system. It supports both Nvidia and ATI cards.

To see what hardware you have attached open a terminal and type: lshw

It will give you a list of your hardware and look for the display line and see
if your graphics card is properly detected.

Did some poking around, redid the configuratin, made driver "ati"

somewhat better ( 1024 x 768 )

cure seems to be Ubuntu HH with vlc; will wait a while on it.

( Not broke, don't fix it )

On a dual boot XP - Ubuntu machine.

quite impressed with Ubuntu, using the Word Processor to the point
where I can do qa on it.
