Problems getting Ubuntu 12.10 DL to work

Date: Feb 15    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 469

I have downloaded Ubuntu
ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso
twice and burned it to DVD more than once and CD more than once. Sometimes I
have used Brasero sometimes K3B. More than once Brasero just can't seem to get
the burn done without errors. K3b can burn the iso but it don't seem to want to
boot.

One time I did get a copy to burn, don't remember if it was with Brasero or K3B,
and the copy actually did boot but when I try to enter the password, during the
initial install part when setting up to do the install it, the PW I enter
doesn't allow the connection to the router.

Once I installed it without being online. The install worked but I still cannot
get online because the PW is not being accepted.
Anyone else having problems with setting up and installing 12.10?

I know some of you are wanting to know the errors. I didn't document that enough
to be specific enough except for what has been mentioned above. I just curious,
has other people had problems with 12.10 64-bit like I have?

The password you set to get into Ubuntu has nothing at all to do with
getting connected to the internet. What I suspect is that you are
using wireless and the wireless card isn't being enabled ? If this is
the case, then use a cable connection to the router to get the initial
install done and run updates. This usually brings the wireless card to
life so you can then connect with it and lose the ethernet cable.

My password when I login to Ubuntu let us call it passwordA, to log onto
the wireless router lets us call it passwordB, two separate passwords.
Using this computer, the desktop, using 12.04 boots up just fine and logs
onto the router. When I enter the password using the 12.10 Live CD, at the
start of the install it ask for the password to connect to the router. I
enter that PW with the checkbox checked to show the PW so I know that I
have not fatfingered it, the connection doesn't connect.

Sounds like the wireless driver in 12.10 isn't fully compatible with
your wireless card. It can see there's a signal but the driver doesn't
enable the card properly. Often the case with Broadcom chipset Wi-Fi
and the only way around is to use an Ethernet connection, or change
the Wi-Fi card to one that's compatible ( not really worth doing for a
Live CD ).

Several routers show up including the one I have a PW
for but entering the correct PW or the wrong PW, the result is the same, NO
CONNECTION.

Well, there were three problems. Two caused by and should have been caught
by me and one caused by a D-Link DWA-125 incompatible driver.

1) The way I was burning the DVD, actually a CD, and it did fit but the
12.10 64-bit version should have not, however the size of the DL was 728MB.
The correct size, at least for two DLs has been 800.1MB. One on this
desktop computer and another on a netbook. So now I feel I have a good DL
of Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit.

2) The burn to CD, DVD or whatever as actually a copy to that disk, not
burning an ISO to disk. Error two corrected.

3) Now everything seems to work but this. I cannot get the wireless adapter
D-Link DWA-125 ver. A2. to connect to the router. It does just fine using
12.04 64-bit but not 12.10. When I get time I go to fighting/finding the
correct driver and instilling it. I have read where some folks lived for
sometime with what they thought was the correct driver. Then switched to a
different driver and the connection got 5 to 10 times faster.

Is anyone using 12.10 64-bit with a D-Links DWA-125? If so how did you get
it to connect?

Is your router set-up to require your MAC address? Have you reset your
router yet? If I can see wifi routers I don't look to see what is wrong
with my Linux box. Not just my machine but any I am working on. Are you
typing the password in in the proper case (all lower, all upper, or
whatever case you have originally typed in the PW). If you have the
names of local wifi your OS is communicating with the device in your
machine.

I purchased the D-Link DWA-125 two years ago, November 2010 to be
exact. Well it is nice to know I'm beating a dead horse.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a Wireless USB Adapter? I know
about the Ubuntu page that has a list but are any of you using one of
these with 12.10?

If so which one?

What did you have to do to get it to work?

If you can see the router, then the adapter and driver are working.

There might be some other parameter in network manager which is causing the
grief.

I don't currently need a USB wireless adapter, but I have a TP-Link TL-WN722N
which has worked flawlessly and effortlessly.

Not necessarily so, I've had cases where a USB Wi-Fi adapter sees a
signal but refuses to connect no matter what security level is set.
Always a driver problem but some OS's don't have new enough drivers to
get.

Only problems I have had connecting to a router that shows up in the
wifi list is wrong password and a box shows up to that effect. Owner has
set up security requiring a MAC address. Using the wrong password
protocol. Other than that most connections are automatic for me.

Apparently it was something about the D-Link DWA125 wireless USB adapter
not being compatible with 12.10. Even though several routers showed up,
including the one I have the PW to, the PW did not work.

This afternoon I bought a Belkin N150 adapter and it worked. I just plugged
it in, booted and entered the PW and I was online. Then I rebooted with the
Live DVD and re-installed 12.10 over the old 12.10 partition.

Glad you go it sorted and shame that such a relatively new device has
hit the buffers with Ubuntu :-( On the plus side it's new enough to
sell on if you want to and offset the cost of the Belkin a little

Admit it's very rare that it happens but in the 10+ years I've been
doing this job a handful of wireless adapters ( USB mainly and one
memorable occasion with a laptop mini-pci adapter ) have had this
problem and whilst most of them responded to new drivers a couple just
didn't want to know and had to be replaced.

It sounds like you are having problems with your DVD burner. If your computer
can boot from a flash drive, I suggest using unetbooin to make a bootable flash
drive.

12.10 is too big to fit on a CD.

It also sounds like you need to review the password for your router.

I've installed 12.10 on my desktop and laptop with no installation issues.

Have you run the checksum yet. Have you started the computer using the
live DVD and will it start? If it starts up then it is likely not the
DVD but could be.

> Is your router set-up to require your MAC address?
I don't know. I have tried to install 12.10 several times. One time by
mistake I replaced 12.04 with 12.10. At that point I could not get the
PW to work on either of the 12.10 installations. I then installed
12.04 over top of the partition where 12.04 was before. The PW worked
fine. Mater of fact I using that partition to correspond with now.

> Have you reset your router yet?
No, but it works on this computer, a netbook and a laptop. That
doesn't sound to me like there is a problem with the router. However,
if you think it could still be a problem I'll reset it. It is actually
next door.

> If I can see wifi routers I don't look to see what is wrong with my Linux box.
Not just my machine but any I am working on.
I can see that router and several others. Those I don't know where
they are or the PWs.

> Are you typing the password in in the proper case (all lower, all upper, or
whatever case you have originally typed in the PW).
I check the "show password" box so I know I'm not fat-fingering it.

> Have you run the checksum yet.
Yes, I get the next line, the second line is from Cannonical

The live DVD loads with no problems.

Right now I'm using 12.04.

Doing a search on the D-Link DWA-125 and Ubuntu it seems that it's a
problem for quite a few users and the comments I've read are to the
effect that it's not going to work no matter what you do. Basically
it's too old for the new kernel in 12.10
