Ubuntu WINE Sound Problem

Date: Feb 18    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 1256

I was wondering if anyone could help me with Ubuntu 12.04 WINE Sound Issue. It
sounds like static on the videos. Does anyone know a solution to this issue?

Trying WINE now that iheartubuntu has a new app for running Netflix on WINE.

Appreciate any help that can be provided on the WINE Sound Audio Issue!

Wine is a program for running Windows based programs natively in Linux
and whereas some things will work great, others either work poorly or
not at all.

WRT Netfix - This cannot run in Linux and getting it working in Wine
requires a bit of work on the user's part. The alternative is to have
a virtual Windows installed using Virtual Box. Web page below goes
into great depth on all this so hope it helps...

You have not heard the news from iheartubuntu.com a developer has provided an
app and code to get Netflix to work on WINE and it does but I need to solve the
sound problem. He did so this week a lot of news article reviews on it if do a
search on Netflix App WINE on Ubuntu Linux.

Found the information from iheartubuntu.com and did you manage to
follow the manual compilation of Wine plus make sure you got version 4
of Silverlight as mentioned ? If you use Firefox in Wine to play any
other video such as You Tube do you get proper sound or is this only
with Netfix ?

Installing Wine shouldn't have messed up audio on Ubuntu but is this
what's happened ?

I actually found a solution from a search -- the solution required an Synaptic
Package Manager sound upgrade something do with updating ALSA and Pulse. Even
he wasn't sure which one work just that it work.

Youtube sounds bad still but Hulu worked but I can play that on regular Ubuntu
with no problem the WINE is for the Netflix.

I actually have not got the video to completely work on Netflix only the
Silverlight to bring the video up on the WINE -- I'm waiting for my memory
upgrade to fix my old Dell Dimension 4700 from 512 RAM
to 2 GB RAM. I believe based on the developers notes that will solve my video
stuttering problems with Netflix. Although Hulu worked great and even now the
sound does too with the Synaptic Package Manager upgrade.

Looks like you are getting there and boosting memory to 2Gb should
make a big difference. Hopefully that's all you need to put a cap on
this one :-)

Wonder if anyone has the ability to take on a similar crusade to get
iTunes working properly in Linux - the one real stumbling block now
when advocating leaving Windows behind and *not* going to Mac !!

Thanks for mentioning that Netflix solution! I had no trouble with the
sound except that the picture has a very low frame rate - so bad it is
unusable. I'm going to try it on another, more powerful, computer now.

I actually have on order Memory Upgrade so when I
install them in my computer when they arrive in the mail it will increase the
RAM by 2 GB. I believe the developer said it would work on 1 or 2 GB Plus.

I should mention that I'm using Kubuntu, 12.04.

Installed using the two links on the iheartubutu website on an HP 7800 with
an Intel dual core 2.33 GHz CPU and 6 GB of RAM. It ran fine, video and
sound, the first time with just a trace of jerkyness, which seemed to
become less noticeable after a few minutes, probably due to a need to
buffer at first.

In Kubuntu it appears on the K menu under multimedia.

Biggest problem is there is no easy way to close it. I do it by returning
to the browse window, pressing F11 to exit full screen, opening a terminal
window and issuing xkill.

So keep at it, it will work, although it is slightly smoother with
(shudder) Windows. With my old hardware anyway.

I actually could not get the Netflix Desktop app up I used the code and
installed the Silverlight onto the Firefox. I believe once I have the memory
upgrade the video part should work well. I have my default streaming at the
lowest level due to AT&T caps and running DSL lite.

I just click on Firefox from WINE Program and can run Netflix Video from
there....

Well the developer just made the app maybe he will do some improvements and
other developers will also follow suit. Hey wouldn't be great if Netflix also
finally came to their senses and made an app for all Linux OS systems. Not just
the paying ones.

I will see once I get the memory upgrade -- have to do this anyway. My computer
has been freezing up a lot and having problem with upgrades and video stuttering
lately. I guess 512 is just not enough anymore. I hope 2 GB RAM helps!!!

I'm just tired of paying for a new Operating System from WINDOWS every couple of
years -- they are crooks - in my opinion!!! Especially just for Netflix
streaming....

You might find that your computer is a bit slow to provide a good viewing
experience. The memory upgrade is a great idea.

Even though I did upgrade the memory ram to 2 gb -- it still did not work. But
I plan to upgrade the memory ram anyway because the videos and screens were
freezing up a lot especially during driver, patches, and software updates. It
seems to have solve those problems -- but like many others the new Ubuntu
Netflix app from third party developer just did not work on my Dell Dimension
4700c desktop computer....
