DVD Player

I don't watch a lot of dvd's on the computer(desk top), but I still can't get
totem or vlc to work. I try totem and get to the main screen and dies, vlc
doesn't do a thing. Are they supported by Ubuntu or do I have to go to the
restricted area.

If I can't get them going, is it possibly to fall back to 8.10 or 9.04, probably
have to do a clean install correct?

I take it no error meassages,
Try running from a terminal, ie in a terminal
type vlc and then load a dvd, once it crashes post the
error messages here. There are lots of reasons apart from codecs,
that cause this problem, video drivers, and dma settings to name
a couple.
