Dish Satellite network

Date: Dec 28    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 400

We live nine miles out of town and there is no possibility of DSL or
cable internet. Our carrier pigeon internet connection is getting old
and feeble.

So I have just looked into the Dish network and was wondering if it is
compatible with Ubuntu 7.10? They supposedly supply the equipment but
they say they require PC or MAC. I know very little about this type of
connection, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I will be
running two computers which are dual boot with Ubuntu and XP. I would
prefer not to use XP if possible.

as a Hughes programmer (Hughes builds satellites) I would say that
you should RUN as fast as you can from this but, if that is your only
option then this is what you need to do.

Yes you can run linux of any type - the installers only know windows or
some mac though. Let them set up your connection with XP. There is no
software needed so its just like plugging into any other modem. Once
they leave, switch over to ubuntu and you should be good to go.

If they dont set up dhcp, tell them to. Some do not because they want
only ONE computer the connection. That is total BS. Its not fast but it
works.

Your the other option is if you get a strong cell phone signal, ask if your cell
company offers web package for your computer. Some do and some don't. Yet, watch
out for hidden cost in that idea.

have you checked wireless? I have carried signals 20 miles out on a
point to point and we routinely hit customers 12 miles out.

if you live in Iowa you could look at a company
called Commspeed. It is a high quality WIFI BB and have different levels of
speed. Of course the faster you want, the more it cost. Yet, any thing beats
dial up.
