Connecting to network

Date: Dec 27    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 363

I've been using Linux (Ubuntu & Kubuntu) at home for some time. At work
I have to use Windows. We also have Windows servers. On my computer at
work I have Windows XP and Visa on dual boot. Everything at work is
connected to a domain using DHCP for IP protocol connection. Connection
to the Internet is through a router and frame relay which works really
well. Now for my weird problem.
I installed Ubuntu on my computer and everything boots up well but for
one major problem. I have NO connection to the internet. The DHCP
provides me with a IP connection which connects me to the internal
network. I can "see" all the computers and servers on the network and
with the correct passwords enter appropriate places. I presume this is
with (automatically installed) Samba. I can "ping" to any of the IP
numbers within the network.
I cannot connect to ANY site on the web. No "ping" to any site works
etc. Nada. Nothing. No connection to the web. I have installed various
versions of both Ubuntu and Kubuntu (all from a CD) without solving this
problem. I have tried giving the Ubuntu currently installed (7.10) a
static IP number for the computer and manually set up the gateway,
subnet etc. Everything I have tried doesn't succeed.
I presume the solution lies in some sort of configuration problem but I
don't know where else to try and solve it. The two Windows installations
continue to function ok and connect to the web. Help would be appreciated.

Taking a guess here, is that the Linux machine settings do not match
what the network is looking for from your pc to allow you access to
the internet as all of the other internal network stuff works.

Do you have network administrator that by any chance controls the
internet access by the machine name or ip address, etc? This is very
common in any large network. If so give him the required info for
your machine running Linux so that you can access the internet from it.

Alternatively, obtain all the info from your machine running windows
as to Name Identity and Subnet info. etc. that it is displaying for
the network and duplicate it in the Linux setup so that it looks like
the Windows setup as far as the Network Interrogation is concerned.
Then you should be able to access your internet network looking just
like your windows setup.

I will try something like that, maybe as the last chance. Please tell me how
to do that.
I also can see other computers on I do not know what network here but I cannot
connect to the Internet.

Wireshark may give better diagnostics on where the packets are going (or
going awry).

I was eventually able to
connect to my work domain and to the web by manually setting the IP,
subnet mask and gateway. The one line (and this is the main reason
things weren't connecting) that I had to manually DELETE was the
broadcast number given by Ubuntu. For some reason when I had NO
broadcast number things worked but when there was one (10.0.0.254) it
wouldn't connect me to the web, only to the domain. Go figure.
Thanks all for advice given. It set me on the right road.
