as a Hughes programmer (Hughes builds satellites) I would say that
you should RUN as fast as you can from this but, if that is your only
option then this is what you need to do.

Yes you can run linux of any type - the installers only know windows or
some mac though. Let them set up your connection with XP. There is no
software needed so its just like plugging into any other modem. Once
they leave, switch over to ubuntu and you should be good to go.

If they dont set up dhcp, tell them to. Some do not because they want
only ONE computer the connection. That is total BS. Its not fast but it
works.
