Adding E17 to Xubuntu?

I am running Xubuntu Fiesty on an old Dell D600 laptop.
It's probably safe at this point (network speed-wise) to
perform the OS upgrade to Xubuntu 7.10 using the update manager.

With that aside, I want to make the computer respond faster.
No offense meant to XFCE, as I've found it to be the quickest
Desktop Environment I've put on that laptop, but at some one wonders
if there's better & faster.

Enter E17. I've read about it in the Ubuntu forums, and some have
said that E17 responds faster than XFCE. Also mentioned is that E17
isn't "finished" - which is something that concerns me.

Should I bother to put this on my system and worry about any possible
side-effects? I really just want to try out E17, so I'll probably
download a LIVE CD that has (hopefully) the latest version of E17.
Hasn't been very easy to find at distrowatch. Although LIVE CDs are
great for testing, I wouldn't be able to judge the response speed if
it's running from the CD and not my hard drive.

I'm happy with Xubuntu, and don't have the time right now
to reconfigure all the customised servers and such. My best-case
would be to just add E17 onto Xubuntu if it's not too much of a headache.

I don't know about E17, but I tried it with E16 and it didn't work at all.
