Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) alpha 6 released

Date: Dec 28    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 439

The final Ubuntu 8.04 alpha was released this week with lots of
much-needed polishing. A beta is expected to be available later this month and
the final release is tentatively scheduled for April 24.
Ubuntu 8.04, which is codenamed Hardy Heron, will include Xorg 7.3, version
2.6.24 of the Linux kernel, the new PulseAudio sound server, PolicyKit
integration, and GVFS. There are some new default application selections in
Ubuntu 8.04 as well. For instance, the old GNOME BitTorrent has been replaced
with Transmission and Firefox 3 will be the default browser.
Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 6 is available for download from the Ubuntu web site.
Installation ISOs of alpha 6 are also available for Kubuntu, Edubuntu, JeOS,
Xubuntu, Gobuntu, and UbuntuStudio. KDE users should note that there is also a
separate alpha 6 KDE image with KDE 4. For additional information about new
features in Ubuntu 8.0.4, check out our short review of a previous alpha and the
our article about Wubi, a new Windows-based installer that is included in this
release.

I'm really cautious about Ubuntu's April releases. If I do not see any
horror stories about it by June, I'll download 8.04 then.

It's strange, but a couple of years ago, when I switched entirely over
to Ubuntu, I lost my ability to experiment with Linux. When Ubuntu was
no longer a toy that was delegated to my back up computer, but my only
OS on both of my computers, it became critical that it did everything
right every time.

7.04 seriously crippled both of my machines. For me it was beyond
twitchy. After a lot of mucking around, I was able to get 6.10 to work
on one of my machines and I put Mepis on the other and muddled through
until 7.10 came out.

Like 6.10 before it, 7.10 has been solid as a rock. I'm going to be
slow to move away from it.

This morning I updated to Hardy 8.04 alpha-6.
It fixed my USB problem, it mounts fine.
But, the sound/audio does not work.

I reported the bug. Guess what?
They know about this bug in Hardy 8.04, and they are working on it, and expect
to
release an update fixing this bug by tomorrow morning.

So if Firefox 3 is due to be the default browser,
what role can we expect for Konqueror? Will it
be excluded from the final build, or will it
just be relegated to file managing duties?

Answer #5    Answered On: Dec 28

Like with Ubuntu 7.10, you will probably be able to install Konqueror
through Synaptic in 8.04.

Hopefully, there'll be the option to continue using KDE 3.x - my
experience/opinion of version 4, so far (from one of the OpenSUSe Live
CD's), is that it's somewhat nasty ...
