Ubuntu 8.04 upgrade experience

Upgraded my Dell i9300 laptop on Sunday.

1. Upgrade required 1200+ files and took about an hour to download.

2. install took several hours as it will stop when a config file is about
to be replaced and ask you if it's OK. This is good as you may have an
important edit you want to preserve and make note of for post install editing.

Result:

a. System was slow, slow, slow after upgrade with 100% CPU use and 90%
memory and 80% cache. The problem was the Xgl xserver component for my ATI
video card. For now, I removed Xgl which turns off the fancy video effects
and the machine is running normally again.

b. Firefox 3.x beta is so new that some of the 3rd party plugins were not
supported yet. Fonts were smaller on some pages too. The non-free Flash
pluggin was not migrated to the new plugin directory. Simple to fix using a
symbolic link.

c. 3rd party repositories had to be manually edited to point the hardy 8.04
versions.

d. Linux Kernel notched up to 2.6.24.

Impression:

Nothing new to get excited about and 2 steps backwards on the video
support. When a friend upgraded, his video card was not detected so
he's apparently running with the vesa driver in 640x480 mode.

I'll give Ubuntu 8.04 some time to mature before I do anything rash like
wipe the drive and install Fedora 9.
