messed up 12.04 install

Date: Feb 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 440

I have a problem installing 12.04. All went well on my desktop but when I tried
installing on the IBM thinkpad which had been running 11.04 it hung up and died
when it was detecting the keyboard. I was doing a fresh install.

I ended up having to shut it down and restarting but now I have a problem it is
saying "could not write bytes: broken pipes." Then it goes to terminal and asks
for my login and password. Since I was having problem with the language and
keyboard selection I have no idea what the login is nor the password.

Unfortunately it will not proceed beyond this point of getting my login &
password. How do I proceed?

Do another clean install and if 12.04LTS doesn't want to play ball try
installing 11.10 again and then updating / upgrade to 12.04

Tried that already! I have the bios set to boot from the CD but before
the CD begins it comes up with the request for login to 12.04 and I
can't get the CD to respond until I do the login, which I do not know.

If it goes to the login for the borked 12.04 install then it's not
honouring the boot from CD so double check that it really is set that
way. Do you get the CD spinning up when booting and activity on the
drive indicator LED ?

I have checked the bios and it is set for CD but the CD does not spin
nor does the light come on.

I then set the bios to Removable devices and inserted a thumb drive that
has the ISO on it but again we go to the login.

Sounds like the BIOS has been corrupted so try resetting it using the
jumper on the motherboard ( if it has one ) and/or removing the
battery. You'll need to reset the time but see if this corrects the
load device selection.

I have seen it where the only cure is to flash the BIOS but hopefully
just resetting will be enough.

Tried removing the battery and then checked the bios to make sure it was
on boot CD first. But no change, still no spin to the CD and it asks
for the login.

How do you flash the bios?

I using the same CD that I installed 12.04 on my desktop. But for some
reason it hung up during installation on my laptop (IBM ThinkPad) There
are no cables to the CD drive, it just plugs into the mother board?
