Beta 12.04 - Updates and Drivers

Date: Feb 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 428

I don't normally install Beta releases, especially on my primary desktop. But
it's running 10.10, which goes to end-of-life about the same time as 12.04
becomes an official release. So I can't really wait.

I've installed Xubuntu 12.04 Beta-1 in another partition for stability testing
and application shakedown. So far, so good... but I have a couple of questions.

Will updates to my Beta installation result in a configuration identical to the
official release, when the time comes?

The "additional drivers" applet in my Beta installation does not offer the
proprietary nVidia drivers I'm used to seeing. (It's running the open-source
noveau driver.) Stellarium doesn't run properly with the noveau driver. Will
the official 12.04 release offer the proprietary drivers?

AFAIK a Beta release does not upgrade to a full one through normal
updating procedures, it's Release Candidates that do this. So you'll
still be in the position of doing a new installation of 12.04 when it
does get a final release.

As for the drivers, again Beta releases tend not to get full support
as they are still 'bug testing' and things can still change quite a
bit.

Thanks. I'll get all my ducks in a row on the Beta, and plan on a full install
with the official release.

In a way, that's a Good Thing. I'll take more risks with the Beta, knowing I'm
going to trash it anyway.

Pretty much how I'm going to play with the beta. Mess around and not
worry too much if I break anything

I have the same problem on 12.04 beta - no nvidia drivers available.
I'm hoping that the final release will be the same as all the previous
ones and support nvidia fully. Anybody know for sure?

I'm in the same position with Ubuntu 10.10. The option I am following most
closely is Linux Mint with Cinnamon. It may have slightly higher hardware
requirements than Xubuntu, but it runs fine on my el-cheapo laptop.
