Kubuntu 7.10 install/upgrade problems

Date: Dec 28    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 412

I've used Kubuntu 6.08 & 7.04. No problems as long as I don't
try to upgrade to the next version via the internet, I have to burn a
ISO file because 'next version upgrades' always fails and leaves me
stuck with a half complete upgrade and locked out of the update program.

But 7.10 is a challenge:

First, my screen would start off black but I've found that it's like
in sleep mode and moving the mouse wakes it up. I have a NVidia video
card using the 'nv' drivers.

Second, when I install 7.10 yesterday, it then wants to update about
160 packages. It died in the middle just like a version update. When
I've installed 7.04 and it would have some 150 packs to update, it
always worked. WORSE, it corrupted my installation and wont boot
saying there are files missing. I must re-install again but what do I
do about the first wave of updates? Is there a specific package to avoid?

Do you the dollar sign prompt when it boots up or do you get a Kernel Panic
warning? There is a way to complete the install if it is at the dollar sign
prompt. If you have kernel panic. Your hosed and going to redo the install
process.

Right after 'GRUB' I get 'Error 15: file not found. Press any key to
continue...'. When I do, I get the menu to choose the OS in normal or
recovery mode but selecting either one gives me 'Error 15' again!

I suggest you look at the grub file, it may not be pointing to the
correct disk sector where the two linux boot up files reside. ( I get
this as I have an IDE drive and a SATA drive and Grub always makes IDE
0 which in my case should be 3) Press 'escape' during the Grub boot up
and you can then edit these sectors. Lots of Grub help about if you
search those errors.

Well, I've decided to re-install 7.04 and wait for time to cure 7.10's problem.
I don't need the latest OS, I need a working OS.
