8.04 Sound Issues

Date: Feb 05    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 421

I have a BackTrack4 installation running on a HP dv9000 that is
not outputting any sound at all. Yes, I know 5 is out, but still have some
use for this installation and would like to get the sound working again. I
have read a few long troubleshooting guides and rather than spend the better
part of a day trying to figure this out, I thought someone here might have
some insight. Sound IS working on the other OS's installed on this box (XP
and 11.04). Below are some commands and output. I would be grateful for
any ideas.

First instinct would be to re-install ALSA but since 8.04 is out of
support there are no repositories live that you could do this through.
One of the big problems with continuing to run an older Ubuntu, fine
whilst everything is working but fixing it up when it goes wrong can
be a nightmare

When you boot into 8.04 do you have any older kernels listed ? If so
then you can try booting into an earlier one and see if sound works in
that.

I think it may have to do with permissions. I believe this was meant to be
used primarily as a live cd with the user logging in as root. It has an
install script and I had installed this to the hard drive and created a user
account for myself with sudo admin privileges. After logging out of KDM and
shutting down x server, I switched to the root user and started x again.
Sound works fine as root, so it must be in the configuration somewhere. I
will probably just run as root until I don't need this OS anymore :) Thanks
for the comments.

I didn't see any content in your email!?

I haven't had many problems running older versions, changing the
/etc/apt/sources.list to read 'old-releases' instead of 'archives' still
gives access to the packages for that version, I believe they are just not
updated anymore.
