64 bit Ubuntu

Date: Dec 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 502

I just got a kit of parts to build a new machine (quad core AMD, 1TB
drive, Nvidia graphics, and 8G of RAM). It's partly assembled (missing
two cables and two fans), and I'm trying to decide whether to go with
32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu. Of course, to use all that memory, I'll need
64 bit. However, the last time I tried 64 bit, admittedly quite a
while back, there wasn't much software available.

I've done some research via Google, and it looks like the two biggest
concerns are Flash and Java.

I see that Flash is available in 64 bit, or so some posts and articles
on different forums say. But I tried to download it, and was offered
several options, but no 64 bit.

Some people report that Java is not too stable, however, those posts
were from about 18 months and more ago.

Any opinions on these or other concerns? I don't *need* to have access
to all that memory, it is simply what came standard in the kit.

i have 64 with flash plugin, works fine. java worked on one machine as a dl with
limewire (i think) but had trouble with other machines running 32.

Did you have any trouble downloading the package for the Flash? I
didn't see an option for 64 bit.

I never had much with 64-bit Linux until this past year. Everything works great.
I tried the 64-bit version of Ultimate Ubuntu 8.10 and then later Ubuntu 9.04
64-bit and both work great. Zero problems.

Flash came pre-installed with Ultimate Edition and if you are leery at all I
would recommend it. It is Ubuntu with all of the restricted extras built in.
With Ubuntu 9.10, I installed the restricted extras and it works fine.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) 64-bit on an older Compaq AMD64
laptop and new System76 Pangolin Performance Intel Duo Core laptop with
absolutely no problem with stability relative to either Flash or Java.
I say go for the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. My opinion is that you will
not be disappointed.

I've downloaded 8.10 64 bit, and am now waiting on some cables and two
more fans to complete the machine!

As I understand it, you can rebuild the kernel with a certain module
enabled, and get access to >4Mb RAM in a 32-bit system. Don't recall
what that module is, though ...

As far as issues with 64-bit versions is concerned, it was my
understanding that the biggest issues would be with drivers, rather
than [app] software - especially with the closed-source video card
drivers. Have these issues now been sorted out?

I got it together, and have loaded 8.10 64 bit.

So far everything works perfectly except printing. I have not looked
too deeply into that yet.
