Wireless question

I hate to sound so helpless, I am totally lost with Ubuntu and wireless.
I have Netgear WG111v2 that I have used to connect to my home network
on a Windows machine. My network is WEP and static IP. I use MAC
address also for access, but as I mentioned the adapter has connected
using my Windows laptop. In Ubuntu, I don't know where Network Manager
is, I don't see any activity on the adapter. I see the adapter in
Network Setup dialog. It is the only one active and I have set the IP
to the same one that I used for the Windows test. I don't put anything
in the gateway window. Should I? I tried Ubuntu 7.? and went to 6.1
also just in case. I plead ignorance, the device manager sees and
identifies the WG111v2 on the USB port. As for installing drivers and
other settings, I don't know the first step........

Dont feel helpless. Linux and wireless seem to be a hit and miss. I set
up ThinkPads with Ubuntu on them all the time and then this week I had
trouble getting my own to work.

Im going to tell you what I do on mine so you see if this works for you.

I have a SBG900 Motorola cable/modem with wireless router built in. For
security I have a 26hex id and filter only allowed MAC's. Machines are
assigned IP via DHCP.

On the laptop up in the top right there is a icon that looks like two
computers. Its your network icon. Click it once and chose Manual and put
in your password. Now, click on your wireless tab. Put in your id and
chose open or shared under security and then click ok. It took a few
seconds for it to get an address for some reason. On XP Pro it takes
about 5 seconds total to connect and be on my way but with Ubuntu it
took about 12.

I spoke to someone on Chat this week and they had trouble with their
wireless card not working. Yesterday I was working with a laptop with a
Netgear WG511 and it worked great. This girl swears by them.

If you are setting up your pc with a static ip, you have to put in the
gateway address. If your ip is 192.168.0.3 and your modem is
192.168.0.2, it is likely 192.68.0.1, which is the same as your DHCP
server.

Yes, it does see my adapter. But I can't ping the
network. There is an activity light on the adapter but it doesn't do
anything. I know the adapter is good, it worked on Windows. Is there a
Ububuntu program that shows wireless networks in the area??? that
allows me to choose which network to connect to??
Shouldn't the activity led blink when I try to ping?

They helped my understanding of the
process, but not the functioning of the system. Still won't see the
network, no ping, no activity led. The Windows machine sitting right
next to this one will work fine with this adapter. So that means the
signal is strong enough, the MAC adressing is fine and the adapter is
fine. Ubuntu sees the adapter, allows me to configure it yet won't use
it........
I won't give up, yet. I really want to try Ubuntu! But it has to work.
