Wireless Connectivity in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty

Date: Feb 05    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 456

I currently have my PC RJ45 cable connected to my NETGEAR DG934G Router..I want
to move my Ubuntu PC to another location within the house and to do this I will
have to go Wireless. I have a ZYXEL G-202 USB Dongle which I would like to use
for this.As I have never set up a Wireless Connection before on Ubuntu[have
previous experience with Windows 7 using TP Link PCI Card].
Can anyone please help me as I do not have access to Linux Drivers for the ZYXEL
DONGLE or have a clue where to start in Ubuntu!

When I started with Ubuntu Studio 11.04 the other month, it had no
trouble detecting and installing my Wifi stick. I soon got onto the
Internet.

Notes:

1) My original USB stick (Sitecom WL-344) proved incompatible. I
replaced it with a preceding model (Sitecom WL-302), and that worked
as expected. After updating my system, even the WL-344 works.
Anyway, it is the chipset inside the stick that seems crucial.

2) This week I had an experienced friend help me to get this Ubuntu
computer connect with my Windows network. For whatever reason, he has
only managed to have my Windows computers access the Ubuntu one, not
the other way round.
The graphic Samba tool proved insufficient to achieve this, but he
knew (and preferred) how to manually edit the configuration files.

I have found a problem on my home wireless network. Sometimes
I could connect my Linux machines to the network Windows PC's
for sharing and sometimes I had "issues". I brought up the Samba
configuration file, and added the name of my personal group used
in our network. If you have changed your network workgroup to
anything other than WORKGROUP it may have "issues" too. My
network PC's workgroup is HOME, so changing the smb.conf file
to that workgroup name helped a lot.

The name of my workgroup is different from "WORKGROUP".
It was a matter that this friend solved by manually editing smb.conf
(as the graphic interface of Samba doesn't feature changing it.)

I intend to see if I can myself find a solution there for having the
Ubuntu computer access my Windows network.

It has come to me, that Ubuntu (to my knowledge) is unaware of my
workgroup password and that of the computers in it.

I have done that and share the printer also. I don't have a password on my
shared drive so I can just mount it from the places on the top panel.
Once I made the change to smb.conf I click on Places, then on Network
and the Windows network shows up, I click on that and the PC which
has the shared drive shows up and I click on the PC name and the shared
drive, and it mounts. I don't know if it would ask for the password if
it was
password protect, maybe.
When I want to connect to the printer I enter System, Administration, and
Printing, then is shows a window and I can add from there, and another
window
shows up to show a local printer or network printer. Under network
printer one
that shows Network printer bia SAMBA. From there you can find the
printer being
shared. Or you should see it anyway.

Let me know if I can help in any way. Not sure I can but maybe.

just a guess from a newbie, it may work out of the box. also, when u plug it in,
do a driver search with 1104.

I fixed it by unplugging the RJ45 Cable..clicked
on the wifi symbol which appeared in the top right hand corner of the
taskbar..scrolled down the box, ticked connect entered ssid password and i
am on line wirelessly!

As you've discovered, the G202 is 'plug and go' in Ubuntu and it's
worth noting that most USB devices are similarly detected and used
automatically. It's when the 'plug and go' doesn't work that it's
necessary to go looking for drivers or the fixes needed to get it
working - has to be said though that some USB devices will *never*
work in any flavour of Linux as their firmware is written to work only
with Windows. All down to the manufacturer here and nothing you can do
other than try a virtual Windows or use a different device.
