Upgrade to 11.04

First try was from 10.04 to 11.04, after several hours it was done, restarted
the system as it said to do. Well the splash screen came up(looks like the same
one from 10.04) but unable to do anything, the arrow on the mouse moves over the
screen, tried hitting a couple of keys on the keyboard and nothing, so powered
it down and would get flashes where boxes would come up asking what I wanted to
do, you know restart,close etc.

Well reinstalled 10.04 and then upgraded to 10.10 thinking maybe because I
jumped upgrades instead of doing them in order. Then went to 11.04, had the same
problem as before.

I am (was) trying to update to the newest verison as I have two systems going
and always update one to the most current, but looks like I might stay with
10.04 because I know it works.

So looking for any suggestions on what to do. Oh when I upgrade I select to
delete all the current version and install the new one, no dual boot or swap
partition.

Do a clean install of 11.04 - it will work a lot better than trying to
upgrade as there are major changes in 11.04 Those that have got
the 11.04 upgrade to work are lucky - and possibly few in number !!

I agree with Barry. 11.04 is a major change from 10.10 and there are many
things to go wrong. The OP was right in thinking he/ she should not have
tried to skip versions. The upgrade path is 10.04 -> 10.10 -> 11.04 or wait
and go 10.04 -> 12.04 (next April). People who want to try 11.04 but are
wary should consider installing a second desktop environment such as KDE or
XFCE so you can fix potential problems from the GUI. I have heard some
people try to install both Unity and GNOME 3 and found neither would work
because they are incompatible. With a second DE you can change to the
alternate at GDM login and fix whatever is not working. People who do not
like Unity can then consider trying the alternative DE because classic GNOME
will disappear in the fall.

I am still running 10.04 because it is LTS and I think I will keep it instead of
putting 11.04 on there. But I also am thinking of trying get a virtual machine
running to run 11.04 on. Has anyone done that?

Yes, I have 11.04 on a vm. It will run fine, but you will not be able
to run unity due to the need for 3D acceleration.
