which light versions work the best

Date: Feb 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 368

I am using Lubuntu on an old compaq laptop which has 256k ram and a pentium M
processor an it works fairly well - when booting it up sometimes it takes three
or four attempts for it to fully boot.

I was wondering if there are other lite versions of linux that would work as
well.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 with 512 of ram and am going to convert it over to
linux and wanted to find out what other versions of light linux would work.

Investigate Anti-X , Puppy Linux, Tiny Linux, etc. There are reviews
and links at www.distrowatch.com

I would give Xubuntu a shot. I ran it quite successfully on my PIII/256MB
ThinkPad.

I am also impressed with Puppy Linux. Leaves room to spare on a 700MB CDROM and
runs usefully speedy on my P4 desktop w/512MB RAM.

I have a Dell Latitude D810, 768 MB RAM, which runs Ubuntu Live CDs very nicely,
even Unity 3D. (Keeping it XP for now, unless I get a bigger disk for it.)

I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised about the performance of your D800.
512 MB is plenty for Xubuntu.
