Best version of Ubuntu for Asus eee PC

Good Morning/afternoon/evening which ever works best,
I have a a Asus eee PC I purchased 2-3 years ago which came with Win 7. I
installed several different versions of Linux, currently running, for the last
year at least, dual boot Mint 7 and Netbook version of Lucid, (I think, this has
has the unity desktop). The problem I have run into is the netbook version of
Ubuntu is very dark. I have tried to adjust the brightness, but it can only go
so far, but that is not enough. You need to be in a dark room to see it. The
Mint 7 runs bright enough to read in broad daylight, but is older with not as
many features. I use Mint 7 as it was the first one I found that gives me a
bright screen I can read with ease in daylight.

The question is: I am thinking of upgrading to a more recent version of the
Ubuntu/Linux family. One which the screen would be bright enough to read in
daylight. Any suggestions? Netbook is used for basic functions, surfing, email
and some work in the office suites, nothing very heavy duty.

Going by your experience with standard Ubuntu perhaps the latest Mint
would be the logical choice so have a shot with that :-)

As for the dark screen, maybe power saving is being too aggressive and
reducing brightness to save battery even when plugged into the charger
as you don't mention it's any better when plugged in.

I have a eeePC 901 and have run K/Ubuntu 12.04 (and previous versions) and
Mint 9 without issue. I prefer KDE so use Kubuntu as default, although
Unity is growing on me. I do not like Mint with its theme and menu. That is
just personal preference. I have not tried Mate (because I never liked
GNOME 2 in the first place) nor Cinnamon on it. I do like Xubuntu and
Lubuntu if you want speed, but it sounds like you want control over the
video and for that I would suggest Ubuntu or Kubuntu (most control). KDE is
much maligned by GNOME users. They think it is slower because it takes a
bit longer to load from the desktop manager, but in my experience it is as
fast or faster than GNOME or Unity and is way more configurable.

Here running standard Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity, all well and good no prob. on my
Acer Aspire One Netbook, no windows in sight.
Brightness is max using mains input, sometime increase it manually to max when
on battery power.
