I have a Dell Latitude D810, 768 MB RAM, which runs Ubuntu Live CDs very nicely,
even Unity 3D. (Keeping it XP for now, unless I get a bigger disk for it.)

I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised about the performance of your D800.
512 MB is plenty for Xubuntu.
