Video issues

I'm having an issue with my display spazzing on me. I'm running an ATI
Mobility Radeon x1600 and I'm having a devil of a time getting things
set up the way they're supposed to be. I'm trying to get a few games
working under Wine, and I don't seem to have the proper video drivers,
and I can't seem to find them in the package manager. For some reason,
Ubuntu's insisting that I have an nVidia card, which I know I don't
have. Is there a repository that I need? Any help would be GREATLY
appreciated. I'm running Maverick Mongoose at the
moment.

What's maverick mongoose?

To start off with, please send the output of the command "uname -a" so
we're on the same page.

Also send the output of the command "lspci" to show what kind of
hardware the OS thinks is there.

Maverick Mongoose is Ubuntu 10.10, and I already told you what the OS
thinks is there (I did that earlier.)

Perhaps you meant Meerkat - there is no mongoose. It's rather important
to get the details right, so the information I asked for is actually a
useful sanity check. The kernel version corresponds to 10.10, so that is
all clear now.

I asked for the output of lspci to find out what video hardware the OS
is seeing. But contrary to what you said earlier, there is no trace of
nvidia in the lspci output. Could you explain what you mean when you say
that the system thinks you have an nvidia card? What was the indication?

On all the systems I have with ATI cards, the built-in radeon driver
works like a charm, 3D effects and all - but for ATI cards that aren't
supported by the generic in-kernel drivers, you should be able to
install the ATI drivers without too much hassle.

Open the ubuntu software center and type ATI in the search box. I see 3
entries on my 10.10 desktop here and the 3rd one is called "ATI binary
X.Org driver/Optimized hardware acceleration of OpenGL with newer ATI
cards" and that's likely the one you'll want to install.

If you don't see the ATI binary driver, then go to edit->software
sources in the ubuntu software center and make sure all of the boxes are
checked. When that is done, the ATI drivers should show up in the search
results.

I am having video issues as well. I can get the hard drive installation to
the desktop where it shows the background, but then the mouse intermittently
freezes and then if I click on firefox or system (so as to check the video
driver settings) it totally freezes). The live CD gives me green and black
stripes (very tiny, not like a plaid shirt) when I load past the 'try it
before you buy it' version. Using 10.04 on this machine to keep the LTS (I
don't like upgrading unless I get a LOT more from a new version because each
one has its kinks to work out).

As for why I say my system thinks it's nVidia
is because I had a bunch of nVidia drivers installed. I've already
cleared them out...I think... And it seems that the X.Org driver's
installed, but just as I hit the Ubuntu Software Center listing, my
display white-washed. Totally white with a bunch of dark lines running
horizontally. If I could catch a log of what it's doing (or find it) I'd
send it to you.

It is Maverick Meerkat which is the code name for 10.10. The mongoose part
is throwing people off. Tip: Usually it is described by just the descriptor,
Maverick in this case. Calling it just Meerkat would mark you as a newbie.

You can also type lshw in a terminal to list your hardware. It will tell you
how Ubuntu has detected it and what driver it is now using. Scroll back to
the *-display section, the card name should be listed and the line
configuration: driver= will tell you how Ubuntu has it set up.

Laptops can be difficult because OEMs use lots of proprietary hardware and
try to keep secrets from competitors, but I agree thinking it is Nvidia
seems abnormal.

Is there a possibility you need the restricted package. I have
to admit I am not sure what it is, but a search in Synaptic Package
Manager will find it.
