How do I shut down Ubuntu 8.04

I hope this is a simple question, and I may be just too dumb to
figure it out. I am running Ubuntu on a HP ZE4500 series laptop, with Gnome
desktop.Everything works great except when I am ready to shut it down. I have to
click on the (I/O) icon in the bottom right of the screen. When I click this I
have the option to Log Off, Hibernate, and 3 other options, but there is no
shutdown option. What I have to do is select log off, then when it comes to the
Log On screen, I have to click menu, then select Shutdown. I can open a shell
window and type in the command for shutdown, but sometimes it doesn't go all the
way down, it just goes to the shell. Is there a way I can get the shutdown
option in the same window as the Log Off and Hibernate options? I hope I wasn't
too confusing on my explanation.

On the top there is a tool bar, on the right side there is a red symbol.
Click on the symbol and select shutdown.

It sounds like you may be running an older version of Ubuntu. With 8.10 and
Gnome 2.24 you can either log out or shutdown. There are separate icons. Right
click on the panel (blank area) and Add to Panel. Choose Shutdown from the list.
