My recent laptop purchase, a Toshiba Satellite, came with
Vista, naturally. I inquired about some anti-virus software at the
store. I was told that Windows Liveonecare was the best thing on the
market, so I took the techs advice and shelled out $50 for that too.
Ok, time to go to work. I work along the west coast of Africa as a
ship Captain. I make the 6,000 mile trip from home (U.S.), get on
my ship and not long afterwards the problems start. I quickly find
out that Window's LiveOnecare is not compatible for some reason with
Vista. It just won't work. I try to load freeware, AVG, it won't
take. Just when I was about to give up all hope I find out about
Ubuntu. So far so good. I do miss the all the features I had with
Yahoo's Messenger for Windows. I use Pidgen and Kopete now. I've
managed to transmit my cam image with Kopete, but I can't recieve.
Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated as this is my primary
way to communicate with the wifey back home. Also, I am an amateur
astronomer and I've discovered Kstars and Stellarium. Two great
programs for the backyard observer. Now I can type in my location and
see "what's up tonight" anywhere in the world. I'm trying to learn
some C++ programming when I get a little freetime. Any good sites for
the beginner?

On the video, you can send but not receive, can see yourself in the test screen?
I dont use that software but I have been experimenting with Skype and there is a
test area to see if you can see yourself from your camera? If you cant, your
probably need drivers.

What camera are you using?

Type this at the command prompt:
lsusb

this will show you a list of things attached to your usb port.

Unless you do not have you cam hooked to the usb port.

I can see myself when transmitting with Kopete. The user
on the other end is using Yahoo Messenger. They can see me, but when
they send the prompt for me to accept their video, I get the message
that says, video not available. Also, when I use "Cheese", another
video/image capture software, it works fine. The camera in question
is my built-in cam on my Toshiba laptop.

I am impressed with what you have been able to achieve in such a short
period of time.
