Timeouts accessing Windows shares.

Date: Dec 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 484

I have some network shares set up on Windows XP boxes. From any of my Windows
XP systems I can access those shares. From my Kubuntu 8.10 (32 bit) box, I am
getting timeout errors when accessing those shares. I can see the computer in
the workgroup, but when it comes to actually listing the shared folders, that's
when I get the timeouts. From the Windows XP boxes, I'm able to access Samba
shares I've set up on the Kubuntu box. Any ideas on what's going on? Are
certain ports blocked by default? I don't know of any firewall software that's
installed on the Kubuntu box. The Windows XP boxes have the Windows firewall
enabled, but file and printer sharing's enabled. Turning off the Windows
firewall had no effect.

I found the same thing, but discovered a workaround quite by accident on my
Ubuntu boxes. I don't know if this works on Kubuntu but it's worth a try.

I have the root of my Windows drives shared just using the drive letter as
the name. When I try to open a share nothing happens. If I add the drive
letter at the end of the name in the Location Bar in the default file
browser Nautilus all the folders within that share show up and are usable.
Other share names work the same, but of course being longer I seldom use
them. I imagine you can install Nautilus in Kubuntu.
