I found the same thing, but discovered a workaround quite by accident on my
Ubuntu boxes. I don't know if this works on Kubuntu but it's worth a try.
I have the root of my Windows drives shared just using the drive letter as
the name. When I try to open a share nothing happens. If I add the drive
letter at the end of the name in the Location Bar in the default file
browser Nautilus all the folders within that share show up and are usable.
Other share names work the same, but of course being longer I seldom use
them. I imagine you can install Nautilus in Kubuntu.
