File Sharing

OMGosh this is not easy.

I have read article after article about file sharing on Ubuntu today. As far as
I can tell - not a single one of the articles has more than 2 people who got
them to work.

I went to Personal File Sharing under System Preferences. I cant browse from my
computer to another Ubuntu computer. I read articles on samba but after
installing it, I cant start it "sudo /etc/init.d/samba start: command not
found."

Can someone point me to a "how to" on file sharing they know works.

the article seems to have some bloopers. It's pretty easy, but the
service is called "smb" not samba. If you want to run a samba server,
you need to have smbd and smbd start at boot. Optionally winbindd,
depending on what you want to do.

I always suggest that people install webmin and manage the samba shares
using the web interface.

You said webmin right.
Im not finding that one

http://webmin.com/download.html -

Also I see a typo in my earlier post - I meant to write that you should
start smbd and nmbd

You're making it way too complicated, it's really simple.

On one computer, select a folder in Nautilus and right-click on it. Select
"sharing options." You might be prompted to install some software; if that
happens, install it and start over. A window will open called "Folder Sharing."
Click on "share this folder" and give it a name. Also click on "allow others..."
and "guest access." Click on "create share" and exit from Nautilus.

From another computer, open the "place" called "network." It's all double-click
from here, on my network I go to "Windows network," then the workgroup, then the
computer, then the share. Done.

I have two computers with 10.04 on them.
I did as you said.
On Ubuntu computer 1 when I click on Network I see three icons:
2 that look like rack servers, one is a windows laptop and one is that
computer itself, the other icon is Windows Network.

Next I see Workgroup which I click on and then I see nothing from there.

On Ubuntu 2 when I click on Network I get the error "Unable to mount
location: Failed to retrieve share list from server."

Quick update, I rebooted and now on Ubuntu 1 under network I see
"...public files on computer" and on Ubuntu 2, there is no such icon
under network.

I have read about people encountering that kind of problem, but I've never seen
it myself. (I try a distro almost every month, and file sharing has worked every
single time for me.)

Perhaps you have one or more firewalls running. You only need a firewall if you
don't trust a computer on your network, for example if you have a tenant sharing
your internet. (If your computer is attached to your modem, with no router,
then you need a firewall.)

Also, some routers can be set up to block communication between computers on the
local network.

During the double-clicking, it can take up to a minute to get a response. I
doubt if you gave up after 10 seconds, though. One thing I have found: always
start at the right place, "windows network," don't skip a step.

On my first machine I dont have a firewall turned on.
Actually, for some reason I CANT turn it on. Something about eth0 always
being unavailable.

On the second machine (my computer), I do run firestarter so I can see
whats going on.

I turned it off but Im still having the same problems.

Someone suggested sshfs so Im looking into that.
