ext hard drive unmount complain

Date: Jan 04    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 363

i reciently installed 7.04 i switched on my external hard drive to
read some files. however when i switch it off it complained about an
unsafe action and told me to "eject" it first from properties. fine
my problem with this is when i do try to "eject" it as it says it says
it cannot be ejected. so whats up? incadently the previous ver (6.10 i
think it was) never complained about me doing that any more than
windows would.

solution though!

When this happens do you have a file window open to that drive?

Some of the usb drivers need some time after the last access to the drive to
sync / flush the read/write buffers before you can eject the drive.

Windows would need you to click the safe removal icon in the quick
launch bar and Ubuntu want you to right click on the thumb drive icon
and chose reject. In both cases you will be warned if a transfer
operation is in progress so you do not lose your work. Close down any
operation you have been doing with your drives before clicking to
release them.
