hard drive kernel errors

Date: Feb 05    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 662

I recently picked up a used hp
nx6125 agency series laptop for short money, no hard drive. I put in a
cheap 40 gig fujitsu and installed xubuntu. Things were going fine for a
few weeks until it started freezing up. dmesg shows errors like the
following consistently:

I have tried 2 different drives and 3 different distros (all debian based),
with the same result. I ran all of the hard drive self tests from the bios
without any failure. The output from hdparm -i is:

I had a similar thing happen with a sony vaio running xubuntu, but only on
startup, and an fsck usually took care of it for a week or two. Not so
here. fsck fixes some fs errors, but the kernel errors persist and the
freezing persists. My guess is a physical problem between the system board
and the ide controller, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Try testing the RAM to see if there are any problems with one of the
memory sticks - would be as well re-seating both stick too and/or
testing them singly.

Answer #2    Answered On: Feb 05

The computer came with one 1gb memory stick, I bought
another 1gb to reach the max for this system. It WAS shortly after this
that the problems started. I have checked the memory using bios tools and
also memtest86, clean on both counts. Today I decided to run the computer
with one stick, check for kernel errors, then run with the other stick and
check for errors. Both sticks worked fine alone, but when I put them both
in the kernel errors reappear. I even put them in different slots alone, no
problem. I even ran the memory test on each stick, then on both sticks. No
sign of a problem. Not sure what to try next, I'd really like to get both
sticks working together.

Answer #3    Answered On: Feb 05

You have encountered that rare situation where the small differences in the
internal timing of the two RAM modules makes them incompatible. I doubt if
there is anything that can be done to makes them work reliably in your
system. Are they both made by the same manufacturer? (I doubt it.)

It is not a cost effective solution, and no guarantees, but probably two
identical new, or used, sticks would work perfectly. Identical is the key.
Otherwise just use one stick, which will probably give satisfactory
performance. I'm running 11.04 on my old 2GHz laptop with one GB of RAM and
it seems snappy enough.

Answer #4    Answered On: Feb 05

Agree that the two sticks don't appear to get
on with each other. You may have success slowing down memory timings
in the BIOS if you can - laptops are notorious for having a crippled
BIOS that doesn't allow much in the way of tweaking !!

If that isn't an option then the only way to get 2Gb working would be
to purchase a matched pair of 1Gb sticks - is it worth it when 1Gb is
probably going to be ample for most situations ?

Answer #5    Answered On: Feb 05

My thoughts exactly, and the installed BIOS is worthless for tweaking
anything. A few diagnostic tests, enable/disable hardware, and boot
options, that's about it. Oh well, at least we have a backup memory module
in case the installed one fails at some point. Thanks again for your help.
