New Distros of Ubuntu

Speaking of new distros:

Is there a way to install a new distro without erasing all your files? Otherwise
how do people update the OS without loosing all their work?

The easiest way is to have your /home directory mounted on a separate
partition. That way when you reinstall, only "/" and files contained
there are changed.
