Unity

If I understand things properly, Ubuntu new LT will contain Unity
instead of Gnome. Many of the programs I have downloaded are Gnome
based. What happens now if I update to Ubuntu LT?

Unity runs on top of gnome 3. Most of your programs should be fine as long
as they are compatible with the new gnome. Widgets and such will not
likely continue working, as well as all of old gnome panel applets.

From the bottom up, 10.04 LTS looks like kernel > gnome 2 > gnome panel
while 12.04 is kernel > gnome 3 > Compiz > Unity. That is sort of a
gross over-simplification, but the general idea.

Just a FYI about upgrading to 12.04LTS - there's so much changed that
upgrading is more likely to fail than not so more than ever it's worth
being prepared for the need to do a clean install. Making sure you
have a current backup of all data at the very least. I'll be doing a
clean install as a matter of course

Thanks for the input. I had planned on a complete install. Not sure
how to do it, so when the time comes I will ask for help.
