Unity problems I created (11.10)

To preface this, I switched my 11.04 Gnome desktop to Unity a week or so before
installing 11.10, just to try it out and get used to it. I can't say I actually
like it, but I'm dealing with it, it isn't horrible, and I think I can live with
it. Certainly better than Gnome 3...

Tonight, I was playing around with the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager
(ccsm), and really screwed things up. I've got it almost back to where I was
and want to be, but have a couple of new minor problems I still don't know how
to fix.

1. New windows started from the launcher open with the window title bar behind
the Unity menu bar, i.e., too high on the screen. It's as if (0,0) is at the
top of the physical screen, instead of at the top of the available desktop below
the menu bar. These windows are not full-screen maximized windows - even
smaller windows open in that position now. This was not true before, so I
whacked something somewhere.

2. Workspace switching is now only possible using the workspace switcher
application. Alt-tab no longer changes workspaces, though it does move the
focus arrow in the launcher to the selected app in the other workspace. But it
doesn't automatically switch to that other workspace to display the selected app
as it did before. Same if I click on the launcher icon for the other app - the
focus arrow moves in the launcher, but the other workspace doesn't display.
Both of these methods worked before I started screwing around.

Does anybody have any idea where I need to change a setting or two to fix the
above two issues? I **think** I have the Compiz settings back at least close to
the originals I started with, but obviously not.

I knew there had to be something like that. It didn't quite get me
there, not even the Compiz reset, but then I found this link:

www.tuxgarage.com/.../...side-panels-in-unity.html

It adds a couple of file deletions before the reset, and that did the trick.
