Install Problem

Date: Dec 13    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 372

I ran Ubuntu 8.10 live cd a few times. Decided to install. During
partition install, turned off computer. Needed more info on
partitioning. Got a book, got more info, decided to run live cd again.
It stalled on boot up. Formatted HD, put clean install of WinXP, ran
through alternate cd, got through the installation. Computer reboot
that was required after installation and I am back to same problem.

I get to the splash screen when the orange bar goes left to right,
next splash screen where bar moves only from left to right, sometimes
the bar will stop less than 1/4th the way, other times it will finish
all the way but then I get a blank screen and no blinking light
showing any HD activity. Let it set for almost 2 hours once to see if
boot would continue.

I have spent many hours trying to get around this, so now looking for
help. I figure since I was once able to get to the desktop on live cd,
surf the web, it shouldn't be a hardware/driver problem but....
Checked the .iso, hash, the cd, memory, did a new dl of .iso, made a
new disk, double checked the disk, etc.

After I started to have problems this message came up:
Bios age (1999) fails cut off...acpi=force is required....

I added acpi=force under the f6 option.

As of now, the latest cd I used is Kunbuntu, so that is what's
installed on the HD.

Computer specs:
Pentium III 497.8 mhz
Chip set: Intel I440bx
RAM: 512k
Video: Matrox Millenium g200 agp (open source driver)

The best thing you have to do first is to repair your boot sector.
Shortest way for you : Take your windows Installing CD and let it go
Until you have the possibility to type [R] (validate the License
acceptation if required). Then it may take several time, a part of
which with black screen. When you get again indications, turn
numerical keyboard zone on and enter the number of the proposed
partition (generally = 1) and you may also be asked for the
admin's password (if there is none just hit [Enter]. At that point
the rescue console is ready. Type "Fixmbr" and confirm, don't
care the message. Idem with "Fixboot" (no quote of course)
then enter Your Ubuntu Live CD and Type "exit"
Rebooting on the CD choose installation and once reached
the partitionning point choose "manual" option (easy)
You can the see your Windows partition, and you have to
make (if not yet done) 2 partitions : a little (2 Gb max) for the swap
and another one for Ubuntu (according the part you want to keep
for Windows and How you want for Ubuntu (40 Gb if you can is
not bad). Then you have to mount your partitions.
For Windows it's easy, just choose the format (ntfs) and take
a simple mount point /media/Win for example (so you'll be able
to see and to write on your Windows partition). For Ubuntu
choose ext2 if you don't need your sytem to be journalized
and root for mount point that is you just have to enter a slash (/)
Then go on and everything will go right.
When installed Ubuntu is naturally much faster booting than from a CD.
(let's say between 20 and 50 seconds after the sound driver as loaded,
then after the little noise in the speakers)
