Sometimes you get this error when there is an uneven or partial upgrade.
That is, your system has older dependencies in use that do not allow the
newer one to install. By completing an upgrade sometimes they go
away. Drivers are tied to the kernel headers and must match. Check that you
have not done a recent upgrade and the restart icon is showing in the
notification area. If so, re-boot and try again so the newer kernel can
re-load. You will have to re-boot to use a new graphics driver.

The other problem could be the driver itself which may not match your
graphics card. I encountered this problem on my Nvidia card on my old
computer. It would not accept 173, but would accept a different driver.
Then, it is a matter of finding which one will work best. I now use ATI and
have no problems.

There could be other explanations, but this is what I have experienced in
the past. Good luck!

I finally got it to install the drivers. This is a fresh 10.04 install so I
dont think there are any old drivers but after some checking, I had a
faulty network cable. It was cutting in and out.
