Printer drivers

I've had a really superb experience with Ubuntu 8.04. I originally
installed it within Windows but then replaced my hard drive with a
500gig one. I partitioned it 200 - 200 and left the rest unpartitioned
for Ubuntu. The installation went fine and it picked up my printers,
scanner, camera and internet fine. I had a bit of a run round getting
the right program for displaying internet movie files but got there in
the end. The dual boot works fine.
My son decided to install 8.04 in windows on his PC which has also
gone smoothly except for his printer. He has an HP Laserjet 1020 and
we can't get the printer to print. My printer is an HP Laserjet 1022
which worked fine from the word go.
I guess some printers work well and install easily and others don't.
Any ideas about getting the 1020 to work and does anyone have a master
list of what printers work well with Ubuntu?

Printer drivers depend on several things. I don't know if wubi uses different
ones from the regular one. If you don't have an exact match a close one will
usually work just fine. You can even add a generic one if all else fails:

Basically, you need HLIP which is found in the repositories or here:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html. Also CUPS (manager), Foomatic
(spooler) and Gutenprint (extra drivers) should be installed.

this may or may not be of help to you, but my HP
1020 installed without problems on both Gutsy and Hardy. I had major
WiFi issues when I switched from Hardy to Gutsy, but no printer issues.

My Epsom printer is connected to my Win 7 and has a Win7 driver and on
the network to a separate computer is a duel boot to XP or Ubuntu. XP
need its own printer driver to print to the Epsom and Ubuntu 10.04 loads
is own driver
