Error during upgrade

Date: Dec 04    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 421

When I go to upgrade manager and select install, I get a strange failed to fetch
error message. The complete message is as follows:

W: Failed to fetch
archive.getdeb.net/.../gimp-data_2.6.8-1~getde\
b1_all.deb 403 Forbidden

W: Failed to fetch
archive.getdeb.net/.../libgimp2.0_2.6.8-1~getd\
eb1_i386.deb 403 Forbidden

W: Failed to fetch
archive.getdeb.net/.../libpurple-bin_2.6.6-1\
~getdeb2_all.deb 403 Forbidden

W: Failed to fetch
archive.getdeb.net/.../pidgin-data_2.6.6-1~g\
etdeb2_all.deb 403 Forbidden

W: Failed to fetch
archive.getdeb.net/.../transmission-co\
mmon_1.91-1~getdeb1_all.deb 403 Forbidden
I was wondering that why upgrade manager is giving me those strange messages. I
know that I need to change the links in the source.list. But, I am slightly
afraid of doing that.

When I get messages like that the first thing I check is my Internet

Do you have Synaptic or another similar software manager app running
simultaneously? Only one can be in use at once.

No....I am only running one thing at one time.

Here's a question, did you upgrade to Lucid Lynx? Because couple of weeks ago, I
had the same thing that happen something like this, not like what you are
having. But about the same.

Also getdeb.net was down couple of weeks ago with a server issue.

You may want to wait to see if it goes away on it's own, or if you do have Lucid
Lynx, like what I said wait to see if it goes away on it's own, or reinstall it
see if it does the same thing.

Getdeb is useful, but it is not part of the official Ubuntu repositories and
as such should be used with caution. I use it to install packages not in the
regular repositories, but then I uncheck it in the sources in Synaptic.
Otherwise I get messages to upgrade packages from conflicting sources, the
ones in Ubuntu and the Getdeb ones which are frequently different versions.

All of the packages listed in your message are available from Ubuntu. You
are asking for dependency problems if you install Ubuntu packages from
outside sources. Use Synaptic to install whatever you want in Getdeb. Then
go to the Repositories and uncheck the Getdeb source. Now you won't have a
problem. Then Reload and you will just get Ubuntu official updates.

You can get similar problems with Medibuntu and some PPAs. I think that the
errors you are seeing resides with Getdeb's servers being busy and
unavailable.

Upgrades are a little more risky than fresh installs and may fail more
often, as you have found. That's why many prefer to create separate / (root)
and /home partitions when installing. The the new version can be install in
the / partition, which is re-formatted and everything in the former /home
partition is still there, i.e. data, downloads, photos etc.
