Where did my 'virtual terminals' go?

Date: Dec 28    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 782

I've been using Ubuntu since Hoary. I have a
minor issue, perhaps to avoid 'reinstallation'.
Where did my Virtual Terminals go?
I hit Crtl/Alt/F1 and get a black screen with a quick flashing
cursor. Hit C/A/F7 and I'm back to GRAPHICS. That works.
But C/A/F1-F6 just produces a black screen. I've tried most of the
minor fixes, like apt update, to no avail.
Is there a quick remedy?

Did you turn them off in /etc/inittab ??

It probably has to do with kernel options about graphics, I found the
same issues with my install when I specified the vga option in my grub
menu.lst to be passed into the kernel on boot. I removed that and my VT
returned.

How about Alt F1.. Thats what it is on my Suse box, and Ctl Alt F7 is my X
session and Ctl Alt F8 is a second X session if I start it up

My ubuntu machine is down right now, playing with different dist's, and when
I stuffed the drive in my spare comp the video was different and no X..

welcome to a superior OS. I used to use ubuntu and never
again. Installed suse 10.3 on my new machine and it's the best distro
i've tried.

I like Suse too. It nice and clean KDE and Gnome. However I still revert back to
Ubie. That is one thing that is great about Linux. So many distros to choose
from and when you find one you like. You stick with it. There is from easy to
hard.

I don't have an inittab file in /etc. SEARCH provided me a SAMPLE
file, but I don't think it's in the Boot-Up script.
I'm wondering if this is related to the fact I've started to run
'folding-0.6.2',
a distributed processing project, seeking cancer mutations?

Alt/F1 just drops the 'Applications' drop menu, Alt/F4 Kills the SwiftFox
browser. No luck, yet...

You may have to do a reinstall. When playing with
virtual apps there are certain rules the developers
make. As I said in my last tx, when I allowed HAL to
download into the virtual folder the app stopped
working. I couldn't log out. Sounds like the same kind
of thing to me. Boinc has problems like that too.
Their forums told me if I don't choose the right
preferences from the start a reinstall is in order.
You may be allowed to pick up where you left off.

Did anyone ever find a fix for this?

I've got the same problem (well, a minor variation, I don't get the
flashing cursor). I had no trouble with 6.06, and I just loaded a
fresh scorched earth install of 7.10 and suddenly no virtual consoles.

I spent most of the night trolling the Ubuntu forums, and learned that
this is a very common problem, both with and without the blinking
cursor. You think there'd be a simple fix that works for everyone, but
there were a multitude of fixes that worked for some combinations of
software/hardware, and not others.

I tried all the fixes that were understandable by me (some were *very*
terse), and none helped.

Does anyone know if I missed a general solution? There was a lot of
material on the forums, and I might have missed something.

I BELIEVE the problem was a distributed processing program called FOLDING.
When the first reply to my initial query asked if I turned off the
etc/inittab, I
didn't know what Mike was referring to. But looking at the linux folding
package,
I noticed that there was an inittab file for folding, so I imagine that is how I
lost the Virtual Terminal.
I had to re-install Gutsy. But everything's fine right now. No Folding.

That's not it in my case, as I have not yet loaded folding@home (I
usually do, I've been running it for years with no problems).

This is interesting. There is no /etc/inittab ... I have one on the
machine that is still running 6.06, and have had it on every other
flavor of Linux, HP/UX and I think Solaris I've ever run. There are 6
getty's running though, just like there should be, there is an init
process running, and it is the parent of the getty's. I'm going to
have to look at the changes from 6.06 to 7.10 closely.

Thanks, and glad to hear it's working for you. I'm sure I'll find a
solution eventually.
