Where did my 'virtual terminals' go?

I don't have an inittab file in /etc. SEARCH provided me a SAMPLE
file, but I don't think it's in the Boot-Up script.
I'm wondering if this is related to the fact I've started to run
'folding-0.6.2',
a distributed processing project, seeking cancer mutations?
