Dial up trouble / Mint 5

Hate to bother you guys with a Mint problem but can't get any help
over there.
Trying to get online with a serial port modem. The network setting box
looks just like the one I'm using in Ubuntu. I've configured it just
the same way.
It dials up on boot fine. The lights on the modem indicate that it has
connected and it stays connected. The computer isn't buying it.
Firefox says it can't find anything. I do have it in online mode.
Update manager can't find anything either.
I have the boxes for Enable this connection and Use as default
connection checked.
Is there something I can edit to get it to see that the modem has
connected?

I am running Ubuntu on my home computer. Ver. 8.04. Love it. The
problem is that on the old lap top haven't ever been able to get DVD's
to play with 8.04 where I could in 6.06.
Another reason for Mint is that it's basically Ubuntu. I'm stuck with
dial up here in rural Alabama. It takes the better part of the day to
download all the codecs and flash and all the other goodies that makes
Ubuntu usable. Mint just saves a lot of time downloading and tweeking.
