Changing the Ubuntu dual boot configuration.

Date: Dec 27    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 481

In at least one previous Linux bistro that I configured to dual boot, I was able
to change
which OS default booted. My Ubuntu 7.10 install is dual booted but the default
Os is Ubuntu.
Does anyone know how to configure the dual boot setup to boot to Windows instead
of
Ubuntu. I don't want to always default to Windows, but be able to change it
depending on
which one I am working with.

I have four computers, my Mac Pro, and a MINI as well as two PCs, one with dual
booted
Ubuntu. Because some operations require rebooting I sometimes want to use
another one
while the other reboots, etc. [Yes I am easily impatient.]

So I wonder if anyone knows how the name of the boot loadeer and hoiw to
configure which
the OS default.

In 7.10 and 8.04 when you start your computer, you can push esc. and the window
will open to give you a choice. Other wise it boots grub an ubuntu.

Thanks for the reply but I was thinking of a temporary/permeant
setting. One that will always work the same until I change it.

Jim Open the Terminal window from the Applications menu and type

sudo nautilus
it will prompt for your password and open the editor.

Click File System/Boot/Grub/ Menu.lst

Scroll down and copy the bottom separated entry for Windows and move it
above the entries for Ubuntu. Put the Separators that you found between
the two back between them.

How do you open the editor? Right now I can't check it out because
that computer is open to XP.

The editor is called Terminal found in Applications/Accessories.

Did you install Ubuntu on your MacPro or MacMini?

Was your MacPro already set-up with Windows before you installed
Ubuntu ????

Was it safe to install Ubuntu on your Macs...... safe enough that you
have seen no problems after letting it nest itself on the main
drive....... ??

its no different than loading with XP. The Ubunu load will make a
separate partition leaving XP or MAC files alone in their partition.

As you can see, I'm being over-cautious about his....... as soon as I
back-up the iMac and enlarge the presently too small Windows
partition; I'll let Ubuntu install on the drive.
