I cannot find "Device Manager"

I am trying to ween myself off the Microsoft teet, so I loaded Unbuntu 11.06 on
the laptop.

I need COMM ports! I cannot find my COMM ports. I am using Aitlink 101 AC-USBS
USB to serial adapters.

The book that I have for Ubuntu 6.06 shows that it is an easy path to the Device
Manager, but I sure cannot find COMM ports.

I did discover that it I click the "power button" - upper right corner, I do get
a pull down menu. When I follow the menu, I can find "Network", "Hardware", but
not COMM ports under any menu.

I have tried to unplug and hot plug the serial adapters so that the laptop would
see new hardware - nadda.

I HOPE to get this laptop talking to my radio before this weekend!!!

(then next project - a Ubuntu Server to replace Windows Server 2003)

From what I read these adapters worked fine in Ubuntu 6.0 but not
since then :-( Also read that adapters based on the Prolific
PL-2303 chipset work well with Ubuntu so perhaps a change of hardware
is indicated ?

http://www.cooldrives.com/usbtoserial.html looks a good place to
start.
